iamgiovanny:

Will you attend UCLA this Fall 2011? Check out Alpha Gamma Omega’s (AGO) recruitment week schedule and join the Christ-centered fraternity.

Rectruitment week is a time where anyone interested in joining AGO can come to our events to learn more about us.  Even if you aren’t sure you want to join AGO we encourage you to check us out.  You don’t need to attend all the events, although we’d love to have you, so just come to the ones that sound fun.  Every event is free and coming to them is not a commitment on your part.  So really there’s nothing to lose!

As part of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), AGO participates in many Greek events, including sports events, socials, etc. Around campus, they’re known for their Thursday Late Night BBQ’s, serving up what Bruins like to call, “Jesus Burgers.”

The Kids Are Not Alright: Here is an image I took back in 2009, my first year at UCLA when fees/tuition were being bumped up. I do not know the gal in the image but decided it was too powerful not to display.

I feel like the image will forever be relevant to today’s world considering the current financial situation, not so much on a national level, but in peoples hearts and minds and pockets…

Recently, good ol’ Jerry Brown came to UCLA to garner political support for his campaign, and being the liberal school UCLA is, students obliged and put him in office. Next thing you know; he cuts more from the Universities and JC’s in one fell swoop than the Republican Govenator would every dare to. Go figure. $650M Or “Go Figures $”. Buy Here

The Fast Fashion Show at UCLA

freedomandfashion:

Annalise Ashdown's "Pastice" collection

FAST is a student organization that hosts a Spring fashion show every year at UCLA. Every single aspect of the event is student-run and student-organized, making it a unique experience for everyone involved. Students obtain the ability to plan and initiate a fashion show that they want. In doing so, the creativity of students are carried out into real-world experiences.

One of the challenges of any fashion show is getting sponsors. This proved to be no problem for FAST. The event was well-sponsored by a variety of sponsors, including the Undergraduate Student Association Council (USAC) of UCLA, BCBGeneration, Steve Madden, Volcom, and others.

The fashion show benefited the nonprofit organization, Food on Foot, as attendees brought articles of clothing to donate. Food on Foot helps the poor and homeless of Los Angeles, providing them meals, clothing, and ways to find employment and live off the streets.

The president of the FAST Board, Elizabeth Fong, entered on the stage, introduced herself and got the show going. A hip hop dance performance followed afterwards and then the designers.

The designers are all students.

  1. Jennifer Davis, Empire
  2. Jen Lee, With Light Comes Life
  3. Toki Ngo, Abyss
  4. Ana Reutinger, GRUB by GMA
  5. Tiffany Lee, Voliere
  6. Ali Guerin, Blur
  7. Olivia Akubuilo, Somptueux Dawn
  8. Shadalene Adamos, Concepcion
  9. Su Jin Kim, Too Rare To Die.
  10. Daisy Viktoriya, Daisy Viktoriya
  11. Annalise Ashdown,  Pastiche

FAST’s Illumination Fashion Show at UCLA

freedomandfashion:

On May 25th, I’ll be attending the FAST fashion show on behalf of Freedom and Fashion. FAST is a student-run organization at UCLA that is dedicated to spotting fashion and student trends. Whether it’s managing, organizing, and putting on the fashion show or planning photo shoots, students receive experience in the fashion industry first-hand.  As an alum of UCLA, I’m excited to be back on campus and attending the show. Back in my undergraduate years, FAST was one of the reasons I became interested in the world of fashion.

This year, FAST’s Illumination fashion show benefits Food on Foot, an organization that helps the poor and homeless in Los Angeles. It is free to attend if you donate an article of clothing to the organization. So if you’re in the Los Angeles area, come out to the fashion show and donate to a great cause!

Challenge 6: Enjoy The Outdoors With Someone

lovehappens247:

To say that I wouldn’t enjoy a challenge outdoors would be a lie. Like most men, I find myself alive when I’m outside. As a kid, a tree or a hill was a fort, a place of defense against imagined invaders. As an adult, a tree or a hill is the perfect place to take a nap, have a picnic, or read a book. Luckily for me, the weather was beautiful at UCLA despite the insane amount of people there on Saturday. It was Bruin Day, a day where incoming freshmen and their families were introduced to the campus. While they explored the campus, I spent a majority of my day with my best friend, Bronson.

Living fifty or so miles away from each other, any time Bronson and I get to hang out is a blessing. I would try to make the most of any time, but we do have our fights. An hour earlier I was angry at him for something he did, a Hulk-like anger that was controlled merely because deep down I knew he didn’t mean to hurt me. That anger went away as quickly as it came. Forgiveness can set us free and I wasn’t about to let some petty fight between my brother ruin the day. If you met me a year ago, it would have been an entirely different story. I’ve improved on my anger issues.

After our friends left us, we decided to walk down from The Hill (the place with all the dorm), and headed for campus. On our way we talked about various things from life to women, but the conversation got deeper when we got to Bruin Walk. We found a place by the grassy knolls and continued talking.

After the HITC Fashion Show, Bronson and I hung out at Jenna’s dorm room at UCLA. I took off my blazer and pretended to be a model. Taking pictures is obviously fun.

Follow Up of the Day: Alexandra Wallace, the UCLA student behind the now-infamous “Asians in the Library” video (see above), announced in a statement to The Daily Bruin that she will be leaving the school, effective immediately.

“In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture,” Wallace writes in her apology letter. “I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video. Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words.”

She goes on to say that, as a result of “my mistake,” her family has been harassed, her personal information has been published online, and she has received several death threats. “Accordingly,” she concludes, “for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA.”

Wallace’s statement was published only hours after UCLA’s Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Janina Montero announced that the school would not pursue disciplinary action.

The latest UCLA drama: Girl against Asians in the Library.

UCLA student Alexandra Wallace rants about the Asian students who get into UCLA.

For the song, click here.

Well, I’m Asian myself, and it isn’t necessarily wrong to point out that a higher number of people in one particular ethnic group violate a widely-held courtesy expectation in one country.  If the United States on the whole culturally accepts that cell phone conversations shouldn’t take place inside libraries, and Asian people on the whole are more likely to violate this expectation, I think it is fair to speak up about it.

On the other hand, the one serious offense I would point out in her speech is her issue with Asian family members and old people participating in their children’s lives in the dorm complexes, and especially the statement that they don’t teach their kids to fend for themselves.  That was an alarmingly rude and stupid statement insensitive to the fact that Asian culture assumes an entirely separate independent hierarchy of social values and structures that has sustained civilizations for thousands of years - far fucking longer than the civilization that has sprouted in the United States.  The way parents, children, grandparents, and families operate is customizable per society.  And that is something you have to respect.  Kids aren’t “not fending” for themselves.  They’re watching how groups CO-OPERATE and care for one another on blood grounds and blood ties.  You don’t see fucking hobos and homeless wandering the streets of Asian countries for the same reason you see those people wandering the streets of the Western countries.  Sure, Asian countries have homeless and people on the streets, but at incredible lower rates and for entirely different reasons - reasons probably excluding factors related to fraternal or filial separations more rife in Western societies that might value such connections lowly!

It is an insult.  It is a misunderstanding.  And it is an attitude that bitches like this carry into their interactions with everyone they will meet throughout their lives, whether they’re working in corporations or impacting this world.  And it is because of these offensive attitudes that minorities in this country get the cold shoulder from any number of cliques and industries prone to hesitate to treat all groups equally, or to be treated in special ways - CASE IN POINT: Hollywood.

I like what you said @pleasegoaway. I actually laughed really hard when I first watched this mainly because as a UCLA alum, I kind of understand what she’s talking about. When I was an undergrad, people in the library usually talked on their phones in the hallway next to the restrooms. That was more acceptable. I guess things changed a bit. And I think she sort of neglected the fact that UCLA is made up of foreign students too, and like you said, have different rules and expectations.

The problem is these hordes of Asian people at UCLA accepts into our school (which is fine) but if you’re going to come to UCLA use American manners

For the record, I agree…people (that goes to anyone who steps into the library) should keep quiet in the library. UCLA students practically live there during Finals Week when they get in finals mode.
